The much-loved Frankie is an integral part of the Mumbai foodie's diet. It consists of a piquant mutton or chicken curry, rolled into a flour and egg-glazed paratha. The Frankie owes its popularity to twin virtues of most fast food: economy and amount. With more outlets coming up in parts of the city, the roll has been through some changes. Here are the ones that figure on the city's Frankie trail. 1) Tibbs Frankie, Dadar: Tibbs is rumoured to be behind the Frankie movement that got going in the early 70's in Mumbai.2) Bombay Bakery, Lokhandwala: 3) Wraps and Rolls, Churchgate: They serve the most unconventional Frankies in town at affordable rates. Their flavours include Grecian, Arabic, even Italian and Mexican varieties. Unlike the traditional flour and egg dough, Wraps and Rolls serve theirs in a rumali roti. 4) Piccadilly, Colaba: The frankies served here are decidedly Lebanese in flavour. 5) A1 Frankie, Sion:

8 Vote(s)

Prospective buyers in Nepal pay a high price (literally) to satiate this craze. Police officials believe it is this craze that the thieves encash on, which fetches them more money than the Indian grey market. According to police, car gangs mostly target high-end SUVs such as Tavera, Scorpio, Innova, Qualis. Nepal being a popular tourist destination, there is always a demand for SUVs, especially with the expansion of the tourism industry there.

11 Vote(s)

A peek in the lives of our city's motormen, who frequently play a dangerous 'game' on the tracks, shows a lurking fear while driving that nine or twelve coach trains with compartments loaded till the roof, and passengers having no inkling of the curves and speed they travel on everyday.Western Railways (WR) motormen, Munish Kulshrestha (working for 19 years), S K Roy (working for 20 years) and Shivaram Iyer (working for 22 years) are happy with their profession, but admit to living in constant physical and mental stress."Initially, it used to be devastating when somebody got hit by our train or committed suicide under our train. It was difficult to gulp down even a morsel from our lunch or dinner when such an incident occurred," informs Munish. When faced with a situation of somebody attempting suicide, or simply crossing of tracks, motormen are left with no alternative but to blow the hooters and apply emergency brakes. Should it be their lucky day, they survive or elsea4Munish elaborates, " On an average, one motorman saves at least four to five lives daily. When we save someone, we have no alternative but to wait for the police to take action. It's frustrating to see them behave like this, but since we are bound by rules we cannot detain somebody." He continues, "But, if ever we happen to miss a platform / station due to some reason, our increment is blocked. There is absolutely no way out for us from this situation. We are not spared, despite working in double shifts and sleeping for merely five hours." Have they ever thought of an alternative profession? "If given an option or choice, we don't want it," concurs Shivaram, adding, "And if there is no option, no problem, we are happy and satisfied with our profession."

14 Vote(s)

Gossip is more powerful than truth, a study conducted in london showed that, suggesting people believe what they hear through the grapevine even if they have evidence to the contrary. Researchers, testing students using a computer game, also found gossip played an important role when people make decisions, said Ralf Sommerfeld, an evolutionary biologist at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, who led the study. "We show that gossip has a strong influence... even when participants have access to the original information as well as gossip about the same information," the researchers wrote in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Thus, it is evident that gossip has a strong manipulative potential." In the study, the researchers gave the students money and allowed them to give it to others in a series of rounds. The students also wrote notes about how others played the game that everyone could review. Students tended to give less money to people described as "nasty misers" or "scrooges" and more to those depicted as "generous players" or "social players", Sommerfeld said. "People only saw the gossip, not the past decisions," he said in a telephone interview. "People really reacted on it." The researchers then took the game a step further and showed the students the actual decisions people had made. But they also supplied false gossip that contradicted that evidence. In these cases, the students based their decisions to award money on the gossip, rather than the hard evidence, showing such information is a powerful tool, Sommerfeld said. "Rationally if you know what the people did, you should care, but they still listened to what others said," he said. In evolutionary terms, gossip can be an important tool for people to acquire information about others' reputations or navigate through social networks at work and in their everyday lives, the study said. One example could be using gossip to learn that a potential mate had cheated on others, something which could make that person an undesirable match, Sommerfeld said.

12 Vote(s)

'Bombaiyee se aaya mera dost...dost ko salaam karo..' We've all heard this song and enjoyed singing it to glory. But how many of us know that it is originally an East-Indian song! Most people in Mumbai really do not know about the a4original' natives of Bombay in its truest form.Has the low profile maintained by the community made them a soft target? Even if they don't want to shout slogans and take out processions justifying themselves being the true sons of Mumbai, they are basically forced into limelight occasionally.Certain issues like the demanding of the OBC status, the plans for a SEZ at the Gorai-Uttam belt, the BMC wanting to demolish many shrines and crosses which are their ancestral heritage, have given necessary/unnecessary publicity to the community. In a nutshell, the community has always suffered a loss of land with the compensation always being meagre. Also with so many encroachments, their villages have lost the charm of a typical East-Indian ethnic feel.In order to preserve the culture that has taken hundreds of years to develop, the East-Indian Association (formed in 1887), along with many other enthusiasts are trying hard to make the culture stay and get noticed. Many cassettes and CD's of the various traditional songs and hymns are now out, hoping to revive the enthusiasm amongst the youth in the community itself as also to bring it to light. They have a new cassette for every occasion like Christmas, for a wedding ceremony, birthday parties. These are put up in stacks at the stalls during the local festivals. In addition, the East-Indians participated in the Mumbai festival at Kala Ghoda and Bandra reclamation grounds as an opportunity to reassert the identity as a4Asli Mumbaikars' and to highlight the art, culture, tradition and cuisine. It is indeed surprising that the true natives of this island city would one day suffer an identity crisis as they are facing today. There is yet hope in revive the culture and bring back its lost recognition.

12 Vote(s)

Furtado's, is the oldest music store in Mumbai located at Metro, has been promoting music and local talent under its "Support the Music" initiative.Under this initiative, the music store supports all kinds of music irrespective of genre. The store has been stocking CDs released by various local artistes and bands. This has become the flavour of Furtado's. Furtado's has been encouraging musical talent for the last 20 years but the movement has only gained momentum over the the last two years, Sahil Makhija, the artiste relationship manager of Furtado's states, the company sponsors and supplies gear up at college festivals. "The idea to promote music is to encourage local talent and to bring about originality in their music. Our initiative creates a platform for musicians," says Joseph Gomes, one of the owners of the store. We support all kinds of live music. Since the last few years, rock music has become more active and Mumbai has become the hub for rock music. Since there are many college students striving hard to form rock bands, this section of musicians faces maximum financial crunch," asserts Aster Fernandes, the sales manager of Furtado's. The store organises regular sessions which allow fans to meet their favourite bands, give small performances, conduct workshops and make the entire rock scene a lot more interactive.

12 Vote(s)

About one in 100 children suffer from heart disease. Unlike adults, children's heart disease is caused when the heart does not develop in the normal manner when the foetus is inside the womb.It is important to diagnose heart disease in children as soon as possible. An undiagnosed heart defect can progress and become inoperable later. Also an uncorrected defect stunts the child's growth in many ways. The earliest a heart defect can be diagnosed is by an ultrasound before birth, ideally at 18-22 weeks of pregnancy. This is called a4fetal echo' and is similar to the routine ultrasound done on the pregnant woman except that the paediatric cardiologist takes a close look at the heart. Early diagnosis of heart defects should be followed up by early intervention. The intervention may be surgery, a procedure in the catheterisation laboratory or medicines. A centre with a dedicated team of specialists in child heart care can best make the decision of the correct intervention required.

8 Vote(s)

Despite Pune being known as the seat of learning, a number of children are deprived of basic education. And children of the migrant labour population are the worst off. Neither are they put into schools nor are they provided with study material.NGO Identity Foundation decided to address this issue and started a mobile learning and infotainment centre for children of migrant labourers. The Foundation runs mobile learning centres in various parts of the city like Ramwadi in Yerwada and near the Pipe Company on Sinhagad Road.As getting a place turned out to be a problem, Identity Foundation converted a minibus into a mobile learning centre. Last year, one child of a migrant labourer, a student of Identity, stood first in an examination held at a Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) school. This year the NGO has enrolled about 25 students into various schools run by the PMC. The NGO not only enrolls children in schools but also keeps a close watch on them to see they don't leave the school.Other than lessons, children are also taught artwork and painting.More NGOs like Identity are needed so that our new generation reaps the golden harvest of a proper education. The street children getting education and becoming an integral part of the society are virtually following the slogan, school chale hum.

5 Vote(s)

If there is a Ganpati idol that elicits devotion amongst different communities, it is the Lalbaugcha Raja. All of 25 feet and put up at the Lalbaug market, the Lalbaugcha Raja is worshipped by the Hindus as well as the Muslims. This idol is particularly famous as a Navas Ganpati ie one who fulfils wishes. Thousands of people line up to do their puja or make their offerings to the idol. The immersion of the idol is rather unique. The immersion procession starts at 10.30 am from Lalbaug and winds its way through the narrow lanes of Byculla, Nagpada, Duncan Road, Two Tanks, Madhavbagh, Opera House and finally to Girgaum Chowpatty where the idol is immersed the next day morning at 5!The trolley is pulled by the devotees themselves and the procession stops frequently to accede to requests for pujas along the way. There is a truck-load of food that accompanies the procession, to cater to the devotees' needs. The procession moves through muslim-dominated areas because many of the donors of this idol are from that community. The route is bedecked with baskets of flowers hung atop, which are emptied as the idol passes below.Another unique aspect of this Ganpati is the offerings of gold, silver and other miscellaneous items. About 50,000 coconuts are offered by devotees during the 10-day celebration. After the festival, the items received as offerings are auctioned. The coconuts are sold for two rupees irrespective of their size. The auction is an open event and everybody is free to attend it.A king is supposed to take care of his people. That is precisely what the Lalbaugcha Raja does. And with style too.

18 Vote(s)
