They cannot be clubbed together. It is the responsibility of each player to decide which matter should be given importance and when. At the same time every player should know well as to when a certain thing should be done or should not be done. Parties have been held in the past too.
The depression that formed over the Bay of Bengal on Monday turned into a full-blown cyclonic storm by Tuesday. Cyclone 'Laila' has got the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) worried as though it is expected to affect only the eastern coast of India, it is likely to have an impact on the entire country's monsoon pattern, including that of Mumbai.According to Dr Kapil Gupta of IIT-Mumbai's civil engineering department, if Laila continues on its chosen course, Mumbai might get some showers by Friday. "If the cyclone continues to move westwards, it is likely to rain a bit in Mumbai on Friday," he said. The arrival of Laila is sure to affect the upcoming monsoon, said Gupta. "Last year, the cyclone storm 'Aila' proved to be a disaster for the monsoon. It sucked all the energy out of the Bay of Bengal, leading to feeble rainfall during the monsoon season," said Gupta.IMD, though, assures that the arrival of monsoon will not be affected by the cyclone. "Going by the current scenario, it doesn't look as if Mumbai or the monsoon will be affected. The arrival of monsoon in Mumbai can be expected between June 8 and 10," said Dr R V Sharma, deputy director general, IMD Mumbai.

8 Vote(s)

Use of plastic bullets is expected to reduce loss of life in such situations."In the past, several commissions of inquiries into police firings have recommended introduction of plastic bullets, which can deter rioters without causing loss of human life.
The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has suffered a jolt with its vice president and general secretary, the husband-wife duo of Sanjan and Sanjay Ghadi, quitting to join the Shiv Sena. The couple, who joined the Shiv Sena on Sunday, refered to it as a "homecoming". "After all, it is like homecoming for us because we are originally Shiv Sainiks. Now we shall work hard for the forthcoming assembly elections," Sanjay Ghadi, who was MNS general secretary, said. The setback for the nearly three-year-old MNS comes after a series of key leaders left to join the Shiv Sena. Women's wing office-bearer Shweta Parulekar went to the party, followed by Prakash Mahajan, who is the brother of the slain Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pramod Mahajan.

9 Vote(s)

The elections to Mumbai's 36 Assembly seats will hinge on two questions: whether Raj Thackeray's MNS will once again upset equations for the BJP-Shiv Sena, and whether the Congress and the NCP will forge an alliance. The MNS showed its potential in the Lok Sabha elections when it ate into the saffron vote-bank with its sons-of-the-soil agenda and denied the Sena-BJP even one of Mumbai's six seats. The MNS led in five Assembly segments, the Sena in two and the BJP in five, but the division of votes helped the Congress-NCP sweep all six seats. Both the Congress and the NCP would bank on the MNS to take on the Sena-BJP again. Much will, however, also depend on the nature of the Congress- NCP alliance, if and when it comes through. They had contested separately in the 2007 BMC polls and suffered. The Congress won 72 seats and the NCP 14; the Sena-BJP won 112 and came to power.

11 Vote(s)

Solar-powered lights, buildings designed to cut air-conditioning costs, lawns on all terraces and water recycling -the Dawoodi Bohras have incorporated these and many other green practices in the massive redevelopment project to turn congested Bhendi Bazar into a modern haven. It is their way of showing south Mumbai how its dilapidated buildings can be replaced with spanking new facilities without burdening its already-groaning infrastructure.Recently, the Rs 1,500 crore project reached a significant milestone with 74 per cent of the area's residents and businesses giving it their approval. Now, the State government's committee for cluster redevelopment has to issue a Letter of Intent for actual work to begin. The project aims to replace 281 old buildings-many in precarious state-with multi-storeyed structures in the next five years. Nearly 4,000 families, apart from nearly 2,000 shops and small offices occupy the buildings spread over 18 acres in the heart of south Mumbai. Almost 80 per cent of the residents are Dawoodi Bohras, belonging to a million-strong tightly-knit community, who live in 150 square foot tenements. Each family will now get 350 square foot free ownership flats. Existing religious structures will be retained and the township's centre-piece will be the Raudat Tahera, tomb of the previous Syedna, the present leader's father.

12 Vote(s)

Close on the heels of the Mantralaya redevelopment project, another massive redevelopment plan in the western suburbs is expected to be pushed through by the government soon. TOI has learnt through highly reliable Mantralaya sources that three builders have emerged as the frontrunners for the 100-acre project to redevelop the PWD-built quarters for state government staff in Bandra east, located around the suburban collector's office.According to these sources, the leading contenders for this lucrative project-estimated by PWD chief engineer S B Tamsekar as worth Rs 5,000 crore-are DB Realty, Kakade Infrastructure and Akruti.DB Realty is a company formed just a couple of years ago by Vinod Goenka of Conwood Group and Shahid Balwa of Balwas Group. This company has often been described in industry circles as among the biggest emerging real estate firms in Mumbai and surrounding areas. Kakade Infrastructure is a firm headed by Pune-based builder Sanjay Kakade, who has bagged several big government projects in the past. Akruti is a Mumbai-based construction company headed by Vimal Shah and became known mainly because its involvement in various slum rehabilitation projects in the city.Tamsekar said the state government's cabinet committee on infrastructure headed by chief minister Ashok Chavan will soon take a decision on awarding the project. He added fewer than five firms had been "short-listed''. The fourth company on the list is Man Infrastructure. Early this year, the infrastructure committee, which includes deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal, water resources minister Ajit Pawar, financeminister Dilip Walse-Patil, transport minister Surupsingh Naik and MSRDC minister Vimal Mundada, decided to trifurcate the project. This is because the committee felt no single developer could handle such a huge project. Each of the three components is worth over Rs 1,500 crore. The developer has to quote a minimum of Rs 440 crore upfront for upkeep and maintenance of the new buildings.

10 Vote(s)

Nine positive cases were reported as more people reported for testing, following the death of 14-year-old Rida Shaikh. The city planned 15 more screening centres for the H1N1 flu from Thursday.
