What's more shocking? A tea stall operating out of a toilet or BMC officials, instead of forcing it to shut down, collecting taxes from the owner?Mayor Building and Ibrahim Building, both in front of Dadar (Western Railway) station, are so engulfed by illegal structures that the legal residents of these buildings have not only lost their common wet areas and passages, but also their toilet blocks to encroachers.Their numerous complaints to the local G/North ward office have fallen on deaf ears even as BMC officials go about collecting property and assessment taxes, giving legitimacy to these encroachments. At Mayor Building, a narrow passage between the two buildings has been encroached upon by hawkers. The stalls selling clothes, leather accessories and kids' wear are on the drainage pipeline itself, which is now choked. The residents can't repair the pipeline as they no longer have an access to it.At Ibrahim Building, the encroachers have gone a step further. A tea stall that caters to neighbouring shopowners has been set up right inside the toilet block on the ground floor. The toilet block was razed to make way for the stall. The toilets on the first and second floors have also been encroached upon by garment shops. The common wet area simply doesn't exist in either of the buildings. When this reporter spoke to some of the 'encroachers', they brazenly said they were not scared of any BMC action as they were paying property and assessment tax."I am here since six years and have been paying all taxes. Whenever BMC officials come I show them my receipts of the taxes I pay, which work as proof," said one of the stall owners. The buildings fall under the jurisdiction of G/North ward office, which is only a few hundred metres away. The officers here admit that the shops are illegal and say that they are liable for action. It's just that they don't know when.

12 Vote(s)

Come 2011 and Mumbaikars will no longer need to store water. The BMC says it is awaiting the completion of the Middle Vaitarna dam project to ensure uninterrupted water supply to the city. The project will augment the city's water supply from the present 3,400 million litres daily to 3,800 million litres daily. There are four stages to achieve 24x7 water supply for the city. These include a water audit to know the quantum of unaccounted for water, meaning water lost due to leakages and pilferage. With only 50% of waters meters in working condition and none in the island city, the BMC cannot dream of providing water at all hours. Working meters are essential to ensure there is no wastage of water."The water meter tender process has been completed and will be put up before the standing committee on Saturday," said Anil Diggikar, additional municipal commissioner in-charge of the water supply project."The water meter tender process has been completed and will be put up before the standing committee on Saturday," said Anil Diggikar, additional municipal commissioner in-charge of the water supply project. The BMC is also planning a Ground Penetration Radar System to detect leakages in its water supply network and a Geographic Information System so that it knows the exact location of every water pipe. "All this is taking time, but by 2011 we will make 24x7 water a reality," said Diggiikar.

10 Vote(s)

THE TENSE situation in Maharashtra is gradually snowballing into a major problem for the governments - both at the Centre and the state. That both have the blessings of the Congress makes it all the more difficult to understand. The Indian cricket team has plenty of North Indians in its ranks (M S Dhoni, Ishant Sharma, Amit Shrma, Virendra Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Praveen Kumar, R P Singh, Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh) - will they feel safe when they come to play in Mumbai or Pune? Sachin Tendulkar is the only Maharashtrian in the Indian cricket team right now! Even the chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar is not there. Will Raj Thackeray suddenly take a stand that the team must be all Maharashtrian if they have to play in Maharashtra? One school of thought pertaining to the indirect encouragement extended to Raj Thackeray is that his votes would eat into the vote bank of the Shiv Sena. There was a time in the 60s when the Shiv Sena was powerful - there were agitations against the South Indian communities. In those days, the Shiv Sena supremo was Balasaheb (Bal) Thackeray, who was a renowned cartoonist - his political cartoons carried enough sting and were loved by one and all. He is the uncle of Raj Thackeray.

12 Vote(s)

Raj Thackeray was heard telling the police at the Bandra court that he hadn't slept well on Monday night. By Tuesday night, as he prepared for his first night in a lock-up, he and his lawyers would have lost some more sleep. The MNS leader's legal team rushed to Kalyan court to seek bail in another case emanating out of the violence that his men had resorted to on Sunday at various Railway Recruitment Board examination centres. But the police pipped their plea by saying they wanted to make some investigations and would produce him only on Wednesday. Thackeray's legal options are now to seek bail from the Kalyan court just as he did in the Bandra court and got it.But, if he is required by other police teams for other cases registered against him, then the Kalyan magistrate may direct that his custody be handed over to such other police stations. Police officials on Tuesday said there were four cases against him, including the Kherwadi case (from which he got bail), and in that case Thackeray might end up doing the merry-go-round for a while.

11 Vote(s)

Source : DNAAfter 14 cumulative hours on the road, Raj Thackeray's last stop on Tuesday was the police lock-up in Manpada in Kalyan. The leader of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, if police sources were to be believed, would not be accorded any special treatment.Apparently, he will be spending the night in the only lock-up at the station. The cell does not have an air-conditioner - so cooling his heels will indeed be out of place here. The police source further said that he would be given chapati and vegetable subzi for dinner.Thackeray is reportedly armed with a book written by Dr BR Ambedkar which also kept him company during his journeys, first from Ratnagiri to Mumbai and then from the Bandra court to Kalyan. At 7.30 pm on Monday when Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray returned to the government guest house at Ratnagiri after a hectic tour he was looking forward to a quiet dinner with his partymen. Outside the guest house, a crowd of supporters was waiting to get a glimpse of their leader. An hour or two later, he got wind of the news of his likely arrest. Almost 150 policemen had encircled the guest house arresting the MNS activists from Konkan region as a preventive measure.

10 Vote(s)

Many in the national capital cheered the arrest of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray Tuesday, though there were fears his "thugs" would let loose a reign of terror against innocent people in Maharashtra from outside the state. While many people in Delhi, mostly from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, wondered why a person who believes in "divisive" politics was allowed to roam free and create rift in a democratic country like India, many said what he was doing was no less than terrorism.Thackeray, whose supporters Sunday attacked non-Maharashtrians appearing for a railway recruitment examination, was arrested from Maharashtra's Ratnagiri town early Tuesday. An angry Zia-ur-Rehman, 29, who is in Delhi but is based in Mumbai, blamed the Congress, which is in power in Maharashtra in coalition with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), equally for the rising clout of MNS."It's all politically motivated. The Congress is also responsible for all that is being done by MNS in Maharashtra. It is said that no one is above law then why was he allowed to spit venom for all these days?" said Rehman, who works in Mumbai.Rehman, who is from Siwan in Bihar, said: "What Raj Thackeray has been doing is no less then terrorism.
What would you say if we told you that the sparkling water coming out of your tap is what exited from your loo not so long ago? It's not such an outlandish notion because if the Enhance Nature Chemistry Purification system invented by Malad-resident Vag Shantharam Shenai gets the government's go ahead, you could soon be drinking treated sewage water. The purification system called Bio-Sanitiser, which is actually an innocuous-looking substance that resembles coal, has been invented by 49-year-old Shenai wherein sewage water is purified and becomes ready to use within seconds. If implemented on a large scale, Shenai's project could also spell an end to the city's water woes.Several housing societies and five star hotels are already using Shenai's new technique to treat sewage water as well as to curb the breeding of mosquitoes in water storage systems and removal of bad odour and heavy metal from water. Also, water that has been treated with the Bio-Sanitiser is being supplied to slums. It was also supplied to a highrise once.

10 Vote(s)

I want them to be exposed to the rich culture they belong to. I don't want them to be intimidated by the dcor of the place or the celebrity patrons who frequent the joint." People of other communities are wealthy or at least well off, and dining out for them is a casual experience, he believes.

13 Vote(s)

Cure my son of the gutkha addiction.I want my husband to start paying attention to me and forget his extra-marital affair.I need your help but people in Bihar need you the most today...so help them and then help me...These are just some of the requests that devotees have made in writing to Lalbaugcha Raja. Besides money and ornaments, organisers of the popular Ganpati mandal at Lalbaug are increasingly coming across letters in the donation boxes. Most devotees have either sought a good job or a good husband but there are many unusual requests from people who seem to have lost all hope in the material world and whose only hope is Lalbaugcha Raja. One of the most moving letters is by a Maharashtrian woman. Written in English, it says, "Today lakhs of people in Bihar are suffering. May Lord Ganesh help them in all their difficulties. More than me, people in Bihar need Lord Ganesh's help." She prays that the Lord help them just the way he had helped a cancer-stricken child for whom she had prayed earlier.

14 Vote(s)

A circular to this effect was send to all BMC run schools last month. Most school teachers said the circular is unfair and unreasonable."We have already cleared a 50- marks Marathi paper when we cleared our SSC examinations, yet we are being asked to appear for this test. What is the logic of this test?" enquired a teacher from a Urdu medium school in H West ward. The circular clearly states that the increment of the teachers who have not cleared this test will be withheld. When asked about this circular, BMC education officer Arun Thackeray said it was being implemented as per rules of the state government, that all government employees must know Marathi. "This is being done as per the instructions of the government. However, it is a pleasant surprise to see that the citizens of Mumbai are making an effort to keep the city clean. This can be seen on the city roads where people abstain from throwing things outside their car windows.I strongly feel that in order to make the city cleaner the age-old mentality of only keeping your house clean and throwing garbage outside your house needs to be nipped in the bud. Especially in our country hygiene is constricted to the boundaries of our house, once the house is clean we do not give much thought to the environment anymore.
