Looks like William Shakespeare's oft-quoted inquiry "What's in a name?" holds no weight with the ruling alliance in the BMC - the Shiv Sena.Nameplate after nameplate; chowk after chowk, the Sena wants to eliminate the memories of the British Raj and replace them with Indian, specifically more Maharshtrian names. The latest on their casualty list is the newly inaugurated Metro subway at Dhobi Talao which was thrown opened its gate to the public on Thursday. The word a4Metro' which ironically means a4a subway system' hasn't gone down well with the Sena corporators."Why should we use an English word Metro for our subway? Let's rename it after a freedom fighter instead," said the standing committee chairman, Ravindra Waikar to Mayor Shubha Raul during the inauguration function.

19 Vote(s)

Shiv Sena Chief Bal Thackeray has criticized Maharashtra Navnirman Sena Chief Raj Thackeray for the violence in the state that resulted in the death of a Maharashtrian. Ambadas Dharrao, a Maharashtrian, had died in stone pelting incident at Nashik which took place after the arrest of MNS Chief Raj Thackeray, two days ago.On Friday, in an editorial titled 'Ambadas, tumcha gunha kaay', (Ambadas, what is your crime) in 'Saamna' - Sena mouthpiece, Mr Thackeray, criticising MNS, stated that the party has raised on ''the dead body of a Maharashtrian.'' He said that Sena has been working for Marathi pride relentlessly and at times have been aggressive, but their agitations have never led to a Maharashtrian losing his life. The editorial, also criticising the news channels and politicians, pointed out that the same news channels and Amar Singh were raising their voice for the injustice that the North Indians faced but did not react on this issue.

23 Vote(s)

The wine industry in India is projected to grow at more than 25 per cent annually in the next decade, making it the fastest growing industry in the country, says leading wine industrialist Rajeev Samant of Sula Wines.Enthused by the "tremendous success" of the just-concluded international conference and exposition on grapes and wines in this wine capital of India, the chief executive officer of Sula Wines, who chaired the gala event, said the remarkable participation of wine grape growers has boosted his confidence."The 300 farmer delegates were enwrapped in the proceedings - taking copious notes of technical presentations by foreign experts, asking questions and talking among themselves about the lessons learnt - this is phenomenal," Samant told IANS in an interview here. The wine industry lobbyist, who is playing a vanguard role in popularising wine culture in urban India and motivating table grape growers in rural India to turn to the more profitable wine grape cultivation, said he hoped the goal of bringing 3,000 acres under wine grape cultivation every year in the next decade would be met."It is a big task, and at the same time a big opportunity, given the fact that rural incomes in our country are not rising," he remarked.Talking about the onerous task of turning table grape growers towards wine grapes, the Sula CEO said: "Though the 10:90 ratio of wine grape to table grape production in the country is poor in absolute terms, it is still a big rise from a mere one percent five years ago."

8 Vote(s)

Like hundreds of foreign tourists who visit Mumbai, Bill Clinton made sure he saw the 150-year-old Dhobhi Ghat next to the Mahalaxmi railway station in the heart of the city during one of his visits in Mumbai. Clinton, once the world's most powerful man, stood atop a busy flyover to catch a glimpse of the Dhobhi Ghat. Like many other foreigners, he was intrigued by the fascinating spectacle of rows of open air concrete wash pens, enclosed in a cubicle, with men doing the work of flogging machines at the vast expanse of the hutment-like colony. "We were asked to move away when he (Clinton) arrived. And he stood up on the bridge for a considerable length of time to look at our colony below," says Rajendra Bhandari (40) who runs a canteen nearby and also owns one of the wash tanks which he rents out to others. Bhandari has been living in the area for 20 years and says what draws tourists to the ghat is "its unique charm, steeped in history". He adds: "This place was constructed by the British in 1857. In those days only the clothes of Viceroys and senior British officials were allowed to be washed. The patthar (large chunk of concrete set inside the washing pen) which you see being used to beat the clothes to wash away soap and dirt) was built by the British. More than 150 years later, it remains intact. There is no sign of damage. We have not done any maintenance or repair work on them. The foreign tourists find such things very interesting," says Bhandari.

8 Vote(s)

The well-laid road through Kadegaon taluka, a small administrative block, is bordered by sugarcane fields and grape orchards. But far more noticeable are large flex boards wishing Patangrao Kadam, the local MLA and minister for cooperation and rehabilitation, and his son Vishwadeep happy birthday. Things are no different in neighbouring Tasgaon taluka, represented by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil. There are no birthday greetings for him or his family, but several for other local politicians. This open display of sycophancy - which also involved expenditure on lavish birthday bashes - would not have been noteworthy had it not been for the fact that Kadegaon and Tasgaon have, respectively, seen five and four grape-growing farmers commit suicide over the past year. Their deaths add to a deadly tally of 70-odd suicides by grape growers over the past two years - a bizarre juxtaposition to the celebratory enthusiasm of the local politicians. Grape or sugarcane growers in western Maharashtra were considered more fortunate than their cotton-growing cousins in Vidarbha, India's unofficially recognised high-suicide zone. That's because access to irrigation, institutional credit facilities and other infrastructure are better here owing to sustained initiatives by the local political leadership since independence. But the suicides are an abrupt reminder of the vulnerabilities of those who depend on agriculture for a living. In this case, farmers who had borrowed to finance their grape crop - the region grows table grapes rather than grapes for wine - faced bankruptcy when unseasonal hailstorms and rains destroyed the crop.

8 Vote(s)

Mumbai is least preferred among the top seven Indian cities by the IT industry for setting up shops, according to a report prepared by ICICI Property Services. The financial capital of the country ranks at the lowest in the attractiveness index when it comes to manpower accessibility and new supply for office spaces. It is the most expensive in terms of realty and manpower costs, but is only second to Kolkata in social security and cost of living. Among the seven driving dynamics those were taken into consideration, Mumbai ranks fifth in terms of manpower availability trailed by Bangalore, Pune, Chennai and Hyderabad. While 6,435 engineering graduates pass out from Mumbai each year, Bangalore produces 23,470 engineering graduates, 8,870 from Pune, 14,947 from Chennai and 21,400 from Hyderabad.Mumbai has the least office space to offer by December this year. Bangalore has the highest space to offer during that period. While 4.63 million square feet of office space is to be readied by December 2008 in Mumbai, Bangalore has the highest at 27.1 mn sq ft followed by NCR at 14.86 mn sq ft.Realty cost-wise, Mumbai, as anybody's guess, is the last resort for any IT company as rentals per month for IT space is the highest among the top seven cities. Per square feet rental here is between Rs 60 and Rs 150 compared to Rs 28-45 in Bangalore and Rs 40-55 in Kolkata.Cost of manpower, again, is one which goes against Mumbai. It is the most expensive with Rs 6.8 lakh as against Rs 3.6 lakh in Kolkata and Rs 4.9 lakh in Pune and Rs 5.5 lakh in Bangalore.

13 Vote(s)

The world's smallest wearable cardiac monitor, a toffee-sized silicon locket, is almost ready at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B). While the tiny computer that can store a week's electrocardiogram (ECG) data awaits a manufacturer, it is already in demand. IIT engineers borrow it, rig some adjustments and the locket meant to monitor a heart without hospital visits measures tremors in buildings instead."I would be the first to buy one for my mother. The basic device is like plug-and-play,'' said IIT's professor Rakesh Lal, of the School of Bioscience and Bioengineering, who conceptualised the project with professor S. Mukherji. "There isn't another product like the silicon locket,'' Lal told HT from the University of California where he is a visiting fellow. Similar ECG monitors in the market are walkman-sized or bigger. The demand for a user-friendly cardiac monitor is urgent in India, where, as top cardiologist Devi Shetty puts it, a4heart disease is like an epidemic.' "Indians are genetically three times more vulnerable to heart attacks than Europeans,'' Dr Shetty, chairman, Narayana Hrudayalaya, told HT from Bangalore. "The average age of my patients in India is 45 years. Fathers bring their young sons for bypass grafting."Indians and South Asians are prone to a first heart attack at age 53, and the World Health Organisation estimates that 60 per cent of the world's cardiac patients could be Indians by 2010.

13 Vote(s)

Real estate developers fear 30% to 50% increase in prices as well as demand for property in Mumbai, Pune, Nasik, Chennai and Bangalore, compared with the ongoing steady demand and prices in Delhi and the NCR region from March 2008 onwards. According to industry experts, with Indiabulls (14 lakh sq ft of commercial and retail) and Peninsula II (5 lakh sq ft) properties under construction in Lower Parel in Mumbai, the demand for residential properties is expected to rise by 30% from March 2008. While Indiabulls property is expected to be operational this year with a parking space for 3,500 cars, the Peninsula II properties will be completed next year. According to Abhinandan Lodha, director, Lodha Group, "The commercial property rates in Mumbai are expected to rise by about 50% with more premium buildings getting constructed. Besides, India is emerging as a leading hottest destination for premium commercial establishments whereby builders would be setting up huge number of commercial buildings situated in one location." Property prices has already touched the roof since the past two years when the booking for Ashoka Towers started at Rs 4,000 per sq ft. However, now the prices have shot up by an additional Rs 18,000 per sq ft.
When S M Krishna was sworn in as governor three years ago, something struck a Maharashtrian railway officer as uncanny. What caught 39-year-old Devendranath Kasar's attention was the word 'governor'. It held a strange resemblance to the old Marathi word 'govardhan' which means cowherd. When he split up the word into syllables, gov-er-nor, the meaning remained the same in Marathi. For Kasar, a senior commandant with the Western Railways who dreams of being a research scholar, this was a Eureka moment. He reached eagerly for the Oxford dictionary, and here, as he had hoped, he found many hidden revelations. Even as his etymological pursuits were on, Kasar was blessed with a son on June 6, 2005. But the boy was premature and during the anxious period when his newborn lived in intensive care, Kasar swung from fear to hope to despair. To distract his uneasy mind, he drowned himself in working on his own unique dictionary. This book, he thought, could inspire a revolution someday. It could help alleviate the fear of English which haunts tribal students in remote areas of Maharashtra. But just as his book achieved full shape and went for publication, tragedy struck. The baby died. "The baby was born only for the book," says an emotional Kasar in the prologue, which carries a picture of the child. In his book, Kasar notes that for every English word derived from Marathi lies a sound scientific logic at play. He has Marathi explanations for words like 'gravity', 'eclipse' and 'periphery'. Kasar's parallel dictionary includes only old-world terminologies though. Marathi, as spoken in the days of Sant Dyaneshwar, before words like 'computer' or 'internet' crept in. So far, he has discovered almost 5,000 vernacular words with a startling resemblance to English. Discovering these similarities is an exercise that keeps his mind ticking continuously. Meditation for Kasar includes imagining all the elements of agrarian society like the river, plough, roots, coconuts and snakes before going on to split them up and derive their Marathi meaning. Among the obvious derivations are 'path' that became path and 'taru' was twisted to become 'tree'. During this thought process, Kasar forgets he is a senior officer. He generally steals time for this theory in the evenings when his "frame of mind" is conducive to these journeys of exploration.

15 Vote(s)

It was way back in 1937 that 'Sant Tukaram' became the first Indian film to win an award at the Venice International Film Festival. But time has not been a deterrent for the everlasting popularity of the film. The film was one of the first Indian films to have won recognition at the international stage. But what is it that keeps the charm of the film alive even after seven long decades, during which the face of Indian cinema has undergone a sea change?"It is a classic like none other. In the 5th edition of the International Film Festival at Venice, 'Sant Tukaram' was one of the best three films of that year. It is among one of the 'sane' films even today," says K. S. Sasidharan, director, National Film Archive of India (NFAI).The film was made in 1936 by V. Damle and S. Fattelal and starred Vishnupant Pagnis in the role of the famous 17th century Marathi saint poet of Dehu. Produced by the Prabhat film company, it was one of the most popular films during that era. The script was written by Shivram Vashikar and the lyrics were penned by Shantaram Athavale. Keshavrao Bhole rendered the music for the film. The film was released on December 12, 1936 at Central Cinema in Mumbai. It apparently ran in theatres across Maharashtra for over a year with thousands of people trooping in to watch it.

18 Vote(s)

Leslie E. Robertson Associates, the well known structural engineering firm of New York that was in charge of the designs of the World Trade Centre (WTC), destroyed in the 9/11 attacks, has been engaged by Oberoi Constructions to design a 32-storey commercial tower in Mumbai. The developer intends to provide a best-in-class environment to its occupants, the press release said. The American firm has in its portfolio structures like the Bank of China Building in Hong Kong, Shanghai World Financial Centre (500m high) and a 1000 m tall residential building. Called Oberoi Commerz, the 133-metre-high building, coming up at Goregaon (East) on the western suburbs of Mumbai, signals a gradual relocation of commercial real estate from south Mumbai. This trend, however, started a few years ago with MIDC at Andheri East and then Bandra-Kurla complex becoming the new business districts of Mumbai. The high-rise offers an area of approx. 825,000 sq. ft. This project will house commercial offices on the lower floors and a five star hotel. Aspiring to be the new landmark in Mumbai's skyline, the project boasts of offering a unique Y3K ready workplace-helipad, as well. The project will be a part of Oberoi Garden City, an 85 acre of township self-contained with its own shopping mall, international school, hospital and residential complex. The building is to be completed by March, next year. In the world today, every city has a modern architecture that adds to its charm. Hopefully, Mumbai will join the league of cities like Kuala Lumpur (Petronas Twin Towers) and Sydney (Opera House) to name a few that will add to its appeal.

14 Vote(s)

An e-mail threatening to blow up Indian airports in January has been received at a call centre of the national carrier Air India in neighbouring Gurgaon, airline sources said on Monday. The call centre received the e-mail on Saturday which threatened explosions at the airports on January 12, they said. An FIR was lodged by Assistant Manager (Security, Air India) Harish Masand stating that the airline received the threat mail on the e-mail address 'call.delhi@airindia.in' at around 11 a.m. on Saturday. The e-mail said there will be a blast in Indian airports on January 12, 2008, sources said. The CISF, which is in charge of the security of all prominent airports in the country, has already increased the number of personnel, a senior CISF official said. The official said the personnel have been alerted about the e-mail threat and checking has been intensified besides monitoring the movement of people coming to airports. The security at the Delhi airport has also been increased as the capital was warned about the possibility of militants striking terror in the capital.

14 Vote(s)
