TYPE : Hill fortsDISTRICT : RaigadGRADE : Very DifficultOTHER NAMES: Irshal, Saddle hill, Shivaji's saddle.HEIGHT ABOVE MEAN SEA LEVEL 370 meters (1213 feet) ABOUT FORT : Irshalgad is a fort situated in the Karjat Region. Other forts in this region include Prabalgad and Malanggad. While driving along the Mumbai Pune highway, the forts of Malanggad, Devni Pinnacle, Matheran, Peb, Mhasmal, Prabalgad, Irshal attract one's attention. The population in this area is quite normal. Because of the very heavy rainfall in this region, the most cultivated crop is rice. As the fort is very near to the highway, the approach road to the base village is available.HISTORY : The name Irshalgad itself is a misnomer; Irshal is not a fort but actually a pinnacle. This is the reason why it hardly figures anywhere in history. Shivaji Maharaj captured the complete region of Kalyan and Bhiwandi, up to Rairi in May 1666. This fort too, must have come under the Maratha rule at that time. Irshal is the next-door neighbour to Prabalgad. A sad incident occurred on this pinnacle on January 23, 1972. Kumar Prakash Durve lost his life after falling down from this pinnacle on that day. To remember this day, all the trekkers from the Mumbai - Thane region assemble here on January 26 every year. Chowk village is birth place of Netaji Palkar who was a close associate of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.VILLAGE AT THE BASE : Chowk railway station, NadhalWAYS TO REACH :Via Prabalgad : There is a traverse directly from Prabalgad to Irshaalgad. From the machi on Prabalgad one can reach Irshaalgad, traversing the fort of Prabalgad in approximately 3 hours.Via Matheran : Reach the One Tree Hill point at Matheran. From here we go down to the base village Varose of Irshal in an hour. This route is quite prominent. A path from this village goes to the col that joins the Irshal and Prabalgad. Trekking further ahead on this plateau one has to reach the village of Irshaalwadi. It takes an hour to reach the top from this village.Via Chowk : Chowk is accessible from the Mumbai - Pune Highway. Chowk can be reached both from Karjat and Panvel. The time taken to reach Chowk from Panvel is approximately 1 hour and from Karjat it takes around 45 minutes. There is a prominent route from Chowk to Irshaalwadi. It takes around 2 hours on this route, with a bit of easy rock climbing put in.FASCINATING SPOTS : As mentioned above, Irshal is a pinnacle. There is a water tank on the route from the Irshal plateau to the peak. From there, we reach the needle hole near the top through a simple rock-climbing route. Proceeding little ahead, we see a water tank to the left and a cave to the right. This water is suitable for drinking. The route, which climbs up from near the needle hole goes to the top of the pinnacle. To reach the top of the pinnacle, it is essential to have artificial rock climbing equipment. From the top we can see the forts of Prabalgad, Matheran, Chanderi, Malanggad, Karnala and Manikgad.WHAT TO SEE ABOVE : The area of the fort is very small. There is no fortification, but there are six rock-cut cisterns (water reservoirs) and image of Vishaldevi. There is a natural hole called Nedha on the top.VIEW FROM THE TOP : Prabalgad towards north, Manikgad, Karnala, Songiri westwards and Matheran hill range in the east. Patalganga river and small dam between Irshalgad and Matheran. (N - Prabalgad, Matheran. S - NH No.4, Expressway, Manikgad (dome-shaped), industries in Rasayani-Patalganga belt. E - Vishalwadi, Varose river, Morbhe dam. W - Panvel town.)NOTES : It is extremely difficult. To reach the top of the pinnacle, technical rock climbing expertise is necessary. It is essential to have a 100 feet rope and other rock climbing equipment.

14 Vote(s)

The Maharashtra government's plan to convert airstrips in six smaller cities into airports has evoked good response from the corporate sector. Around 28 companies have submitted their request for qualification (RFQ), which include ADAG's Reliance Airport Developers Ltd, Anand Jain-promoted Jai Corporation Ltd, GVK, Lanco Infratech Ltd, Maytas Infrastructure Ltd, and Essel Infraprojects Ltd. The government plans to upgrade airstrips of Nanded, Osmanabad, Latur, Yavatmal, Baramati and Jalgaon. The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), state government's industrial infrastructure arm, is the nodal agency for the project while Mumbai-based Darashaw Ltd is the consultant. Speaking with Business Standard, MIDC's chief executive officer Rajiv Jalota said the shortlisting of the companies was expected to be over by the end of January after which the companies would be required to submit request for proposal (RFP) within one month. The bid process is likely to be completed by mid-2008. "These airports can be used as a maintenance and parking facility to run aviation academies, and can eventually be turned into commercial airports," said Jalota.

13 Vote(s)

The message said: "Now there will be no pleading or prayers. It is war now and it will end in either victory or death."The court relied on the eye-witness accounts of Pramod's wife Rekha Mahajan and domestic help Mahesh Wankhede.
PUNE: When 13-year-olds Sujit and Akshay met their idol, former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, on Sunday, they were desperate to ask him one question: a4Why does the government want to snatch away our land for building an airport and factories, and would you help save it?' But lack of communication skills in English prevented them from doing so.The same question lingered in the minds of hundreds of other students of zilla parishad (ZP) schools in Rajgurunagar and nearby villages, about 50 km from Pune, who are well acquainted with the burning issues of the airport, MIDC and factories.Though they are taught English from std I onwards, the subject is taught in Marathi by teachers who have done their diploma in education in Marathi. This hardly equips the students to communicate in the language.

12 Vote(s)

The protocol for securing some of Microsoft's wireless keyboards has been cracked, opening up the possibility of keystroke logging, according to Swiss security company Dreamlab Technologies.Researchers from the company have said they are also close to being able to use the hack to control affected computers remotely.Microsoft's Wireless Optical Desktop 1000 and 2000 keyboards communicate by transmitting radio signals to the sound card in a user's computer. The data stream is encrypted using an exclusion-or (XOR) cipher, which is not strong enough to secure the communication, according to Dreamlab's senior security specialist, Max Moser."This is nothing like a crypto-algorithm," Moser told ZDNet UK, a CNET News.com sister site. "An exclusion-or binary is really a simple mathematical idea. You can crack the cipher by hand. You take two values, write both lines and look at the different digits. When either the top or the lower line is 1, you write 1. If both are 0, you write 0. For me, this is just obfuscation (rather than encryption)."

9 Vote(s)

Arnala is built on a small island of the Arnala port. Since the fort is built on an island and surrounded on all sides by water it is also known as "Jaldurg" or "Janjire Arnala" Portuguese called the island "Ilha das vocas". A mosque and a temple peacefully co-exists inside, without any qualms. The watch tower at the tip of the island, is a source of mysterious stories. Before the Portuguese control of the island, the island was controlled by the Muslim rulers of Gujarat. The island is near the mouth of Vaitarna river and the Portuguese used it to observe and control shipping and navigation along the western coast.History :The fort was originally constructed in 1516 by a local chieftain of Gujarat, Sultan Mahmud Begda. In 1530s, the Portuguese, after establishing at Bassein (Vasai), conquered this fort, started reconstruction and named it as Ilhas das vocas. The Portuguese retained control of the fort for over 2 centuries. In 1737, Chimaji Appa, brother of Baji Rao I, took control of Bassein fort in a battle, the Battle of Vasai. Soon after this, Shankarji Pant, Chimaji's general persuaded him to take on Portuguese to get Arnala Fort. The first attack was routed by Portuguese' naval force. Soon it was followed by a second assualt, which took Portuguese by surprise and they lost control of the fort. Marathas controlled the fort till 1817, when they were attacked by British and forced to surrender.Getting there : By Air : Nearest airport is MumbaiBy Rail : Nearest railhead is Vasai. Stories of incredible valour and heroic deeds are etched on every pebble at Raigad. It was here that Shivaji built his capital city in the 14th century, and here that he crowned himself Chhatrapati. For six years upto his death, Raigad remained the capital of the Marathas with its broad gates and magnificent monuments.
A special task force in Mumbai has begun keeping tabs on housing societies to see whether children below the age of 18 are working there, especially in affluent households. The focus has shifted to homes after a two-year crackdown on industrial units succeeded in curbing child labour significantly.Till now 67 raids have been conducted and 2058 children rescued. Also, 408 employers have also been arrested. With increased awareness, employers sent almost 30,000 children back home across the state. But now the focus has moved from industrial units to posh homes. In fact, estimates with NGOs indicate that half the child labour in Maharashtra is employed in domestic households.''In two years, child labour in the city has reduced from 35,000 to about 7000-8000 with another 7000 employed as domestic workers,'' said Kishore Bhamre, Outreach Co-ordinator, Pratham NGO.

9 Vote(s)

It is great to see numerous multinational companies investing in technology-related rural initiatives but looks like many of the experiments will take a long time to be commercially viable. Here's an example. In 1998, India invested half a million dollars in a project to connect 40,000 farmers in Maharashtra state via 54 Internet kiosks to access information regarding market prices etc. After seeing that PCs were not being used for the desired purpose, the research team replaced the PCs with a smart phone stored in the main village, that serves as a gateway to accept and transmit data to and from the farmers, who could now check how much sugarcane they have in the warehouse via SMS.But looks like these efforts too are part of work in progress, according to Rick Rashid, head of Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) Research. "We will get to know in the future if they can be commercialised," Rashid said regarding the project, which is based in Warana in Maharashtra. "As of now, we are focusing on basic research."

12 Vote(s)

In an incident that can easily find a place in the a4Man in Wild' series shown on a nature channel, aman who was lost in the dense forest of the Sahyadri ranges near Khandala, spent 32 days without food and potable water before finding his way back to civilisation. This is the story of civil engineer Ajay Tanaji Kolhe (30) of Wagale Estate in Thane. Kolhe, along with a team of eight trekkers, came to Khandala on September 1. The trek started in the Ulhas valley, around 55 km from here.According to Lonavla police, the team started their expedition on September 2. However, while crossing a nullah, Kolhe went missing. One of the trekkers, Dattatray Malekar (59) of Thane, informed the police and lodged a missing complaint. Police inspector Balraj Lanjile told TOI that the team comprised professional trekkers and their route was planned in advance. "For two days, the police searched the forest with the help of local tribal people but failed to find Kolhe," Lanjile added. After September 3, heavy rains lashed Lonavla, Khandala and adjoining areas for three days. "This affected the search, but it continued," Lanjile said.Despite repeated attempts, the police failed to locate Kolhe and his family members started doubting other trekkers. They submitted an application to the police seeking interrogation of other team members. The seven trekkers even applied for anticipatory bail.Police said the forest has an area of over 20 square kilometres and the streams in the forest flow towards Raigad district and Navi Mumbai. Finally, on October 3, Kolhe was found in an unconscious state near the Lokhandwala complex in Lonavla. He was found lying in a nullah and a gardener took him to a local hospital.Kolhe's brother advocate Sanjay said Kolhe "is still undergoing treatment and has not recovered from the weakness."In his statement, Kolhe said he was following other trekkers. However, he took a wrong path and lost his way. While walking, he fell down and his head hit on something and he became unconscious. He regained his senses only after two days.He was hungry and started searching for something to eat. "I got nothing to eat and water was not potable. I walked five days without food and water."In desperation he ate grass and drank filthy water from a nullah. "There was no place in the forest to take shelter from heavy rains.""After spending 20 days in the jungle, he decided to kill himself," his brother said. "But he wanted to see his mother, so he continued to walk and finally reached Lonavla."

11 Vote(s)

His problems, tribulations, resolutions are the same. The film is going to be subtitled in English. I'm not worried how they will react but am keen to see their reaction," said Madhavan, Actor.Evano Oruvan also sees Madhavan in three new avtars - as actor, dialogue writer and as producer. The actor has grand plans for his new production house 'Leukos' which has also purchased the worldwide rights of this film."I'm going to be choosy about the kind of films Leukos is going to be associated with. I want it to be breaking cinema, slightly different, over the edge kind of cinema," said Madhavan, actor. But Maddy's fans in India will have to wait until December to see if this movie creates the same magic of the Marathi blockbuster.

11 Vote(s)

The civic health care system in Mumbai was set up primarily for those who cannot afford health care by supplying basic medicines and treatment for free.Drugs like Paracetamol and Septran, which come under the BMC schedule of essential drugs, are meant to be given free. But in reality, patients claim they are told it's out of stock.''Even Paracetamol is not available, we are told to get it from outside. Just the check up is free, so we get that done and buy the medicines outside. What is the point of such a facility then?'' said Saira, health worker. The impact of the shortage is felt most in health centres across Mumbai. Over 100 such centres are meant for the poor who have the least access to healthcare.Every year, the BMC spends over Rs 200 crore on purchasing the essential drugs. So the question activists ask, is where does the money go?But civic authorities deny there is any corruption or for that matter any shortage of drugs.''There is no shortage of drugs in any primary health centres at the most maybe some problem in logistics but no drugs shortage,'' said Kishore Gajbhiye, Additional Municipal Commissioner. But on the ground, a different story emerges and health activists now plan to use the Right to Information Act to probe why the public health care system is failing those who need it the most.

13 Vote(s)

'Is sugar sweet (Yes/No)?' The bitter reality is that 30% of Maharashtra's Class V students could not answer this question in a basic written test on English.Several Class IV students could not tell a triangle from a square or a circle, and thousands of Class V students could not write the first five letters of the English alphabet despite having studied the language for three years. The academic year has opened on a rather low note in schools this year. After a month of revisiting what had been studied the previous year, students from classes II to VII in 56,000 schools across Maharashtra were tested on their basic knowledge. The results revealed that though the state is pumping huge amounts of resources into infrastructure for schools, little is being done to improve schooling. The tests were conducted in July under the quality improvement programme after all schools held a month of revisions. TOI has a copy of the recently compiled results. The tests were not quite the same as the baseline tests conducted last year, when the state education department found 31.7 lakh illiterate children in Maharashtra. Overall, of the 35.89 lakh students in primarily Marathi-medium schools who took this year's tests, an average of 25% did not qualify in the Marathi and maths basic tests, while the corresponding figure for English was 30%.

13 Vote(s)

The stage at Nirmal Lifestyle, Mumbai was on fire as the two Indian Idol finalists, Prashant Tamang and Amit Paul rocked the city with their enthralling performances. The show started off with none other than Hussain welcoming and cheering the crowd. This was followed by a grand Maharashtrain entry for the finalists- Amit and Prashant;they looked majestic, wearing Marathi Paghdis, they came on the performance floors from their caravans in decorated Auto Rickshaws, and were welcomed onto the stage with dhols, trumpets and much more. The whole atmosphere was festive, nevertheless!Hussain, Amit and Prashant welcomed the audience in their own typical ways, and just when you thought that the stage couldn't get any hotter, Sanjay Dutt made a guest appearance on stage to cheer for two competitors and to also thank the audience for their support during his crucial time. With the festive occasion of Ganesh Chathurthi coming up, Sanjay and the contestants performed the Ganapati Arti on stage, bringing in a Pandit and a statue of Lord Ganesha. Sanjay quickly bid everyone a farewell, after officially giving the count down to the voting lines being open and followed it up by singing a song from the movie - Kaante and by talking a little about his latest release - Dhamaal.

10 Vote(s)

Milind Gunaji is more than just an actor. He is a nature enthusiast, photographer and has travelled extensively, not just abroad, but in the interiors of Maharashtra too. The actor says hosting travel shows is the best option for him as it mixes both work and pleasure for him. I am very passionate about nature and environment. I have written about six books on the various places and they have been appreciated by people. I love exploring new places and writing about them, so that more people get to know about them," he says.Milind has now been chosen to be the brand ambassador for wildlife and forests of Maharashtra by the Maharashtra forest ministry. Besides making documentaries on the wildlife, I'll also be part of the film that will be made by a channel on the jungles of Maharashtra, informs the actor.Milind who's passionate about hosting travel shows has two such serials on regional channels. But why don't we see him in any of the soaps. I was doing Kulvaddhu on Sony, but I must admit that doing a daily is quite a hectic job. One has to work non-stop from 9 am to 10.30 pm! I prefer doing weeklies. With weeklies you also get time to pursue other things. It's alright to do a daily if your bread and butter depends on it. Dailies are only to earn a living, but if you want to act, you should look at weeklies or films, says Milind who will be seen in films like Black and White , Humne Bhi Jeena Seekh Liya, etc.Milind says that he would love to make a travel show for Hindi channels. But they are just not interested. Right now most channels can't look beyond family soaps. They will not give a travel show the prime time slot. But I believe that if you make a good show the audiences will watch it. There's a huge section of the audience that watches such programmes. We just need to tap them, he says.

14 Vote(s)

Many stations have logical roots in history - named either after legendary people, age-old traditions or businesses carried on in the area or for unknown reasons. Santa Cruz: Santa Cruz was originally known by villagers as Khulbawdi (in Marathi khul is mortar or also a yard, bawdi, a well) Santa Cruz (Holy Cross) was so named by its population of Salsette East Indian Christians after a crude wooden cross they erected on a hilltop Vile Parle: its name possibly from a combination of the Portuguese word vehla that means old and the Marathi word pada which means a cluster of villages. Another story has it that the name Vile Parle is derived from the names of small villages that included Idlai - Padlai. Thus she derived name Vile Parle. Kandivali: is supposed to have derived its name from khand, a jag or a sharp projection of rock, perhaps part of the stone quarries located there. Ghatkopar: In Marathi it literally means on top of a ghat Wadala: The area located near Dadar T.T./Kings Circle was so named because of the banyan tree rows it that used to exist in this area. The name is a corruption of Wadali. Wad, which is the Marathi name for the Banyan tree and ali, which means row.

14 Vote(s)
