The monthly electricity bill is likely to increase up to 30% for more than 35 lakh power consumers in the city. Sources in the power industry say Reliance Infrastructure (RInfra), formerly known as Reliance Energy Limited, and the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking are expected to increase their tariffs by 20-30%.
If energy minister Dilip Walse Patil accepts the suggestions made by the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), all government offices, malls and theatres across the state, except Mumbai, will be open for five days a week.

Close on the heels of a steep hike in petroleum prices, residents of Mumbai's suburbs will have to absorb a moderate hike in electricity tariff with effect from June 1.
State power regulator MERC on Thursday cleared an average tariff hike of 10.22% across categories for consumers of Reliance Energy Limited (REL), the supplier in suburbs.

Load-shedding may soon become a matter of past for Thane and Navi Mumbai.
The Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) has received offers from two leading power trading companies to supply additional electricity required to end power cuts in Mulund, Bhandup, Navi Mumbai and Thane.

Residents of the island city, who use more than 300 units of electricity per month, will face the heat this summer thanks to BEST, which has decided to charge Rs 2.50 for every unit over and above 300 units consumed.
The existing rate is Rs 1.57 and the new tariff will be effective from May 1. The BEST, which distributes power in south Mumbai, caters to over 9 lakh consumers.

A Navi-Mumbai-based activist has threatened to sue the state government if power-cut were not rescheduled during class 10 and 12 examinations, due to start by month-end.
However, Maharashtra State Electricity Board officials said power-cuts could not be helped, examinations or no examinations.
