Mumbai’s ambitious metro rail project today received a shot in the arm with the Centre announcing the sanctioning of Rs 4,500 crore for its completion.
“Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh had requested for funds from the Centre. The Centre is sanctioning Rs 4,500 crore as viability gap funding for the Mumbai Metro Rail Project (MMRP)” Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy said.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which plans to construct 50 skywalks across the city, will start work on the first pilot skywalk-cum-elevated hawking plaza at Kanjurmarg by October.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has got the go-ahead from Central Railway (CR) for single-window clearance for the Rs 600-crore skywalk project in the city.
MMRDA chief Ratnakar Gaikwad had a talk with CR general manager Soumiya Raghavan about creating a single-window clearance to speed up the projects. Over 50 skywalks are planned for the city.
