The pot of gold which Indian Railways was sitting on for decades can at last be opened.
The state government on Wednesday paved the way for development of a 11-acre plot adjoining the Bandra (east) suburban station by granting a floor space index (FSI) of 4, which means that the built-up portion can go up to 44 acres of space.
Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav’s announcement on posting licensed porters as railway gangmen and in other Group D posts may have evoked cheer, but whether the 6,500 such posts lying vacant in the five divisions of Central Railway (CR) in Maharashtra would be filled up by them remains a question.
Ostensibly, this is good news for lakhs of Central Railway (CR) commuters — the first of the next generation trains has arrived. While Western Railway commuters have been using a few new services on the new rakes for a few weeks now, CR finally got its first new Siemens-made rake, which will b ready for commuters by the month-end.
Commuters travelling on the Central Railways' suburban line will now have to wait less with authorities announcing 33 new services from October 2.
Of the new trains, 25 would be on the Harbour line and among them 12 would link the western suburb of Andheri with Panvel in neighbouring Raigad district, the last stop on the Harbour line, railway authorities said.
