The Maharashtra Government has decided to closely monitor the modernisation of mills and form a separate employment exchange centre to provide jobs to millworkers and their family members in industries or offices set up on the mill land.

Owners of the mills, which lay defunct for several years, were allowed to sell or redevelop their vast land holdings spread across the city by the government on the condition that the BMC and Maharashtra Housing & Area Development Authority (MHADA) would each be given one-third of the open space on the premises before the rest is developed into commercial and/or residential complexes.
