Western Railway has selected Dadar and Virar stations to install the first set of escalators at railway stations in the city, according to the promise made by Railway Minister Lalu Prasad in his budget speech.
Prasad had promised escalators at Mumbai's railway stations for the ease of commuters.
Mumbai’s ambitious metro rail project today received a shot in the arm with the Centre announcing the sanctioning of Rs 4,500 crore for its completion.
“Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh had requested for funds from the Centre. The Centre is sanctioning Rs 4,500 crore as viability gap funding for the Mumbai Metro Rail Project (MMRP)” Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy said.

Ostensibly, this is good news for lakhs of Central Railway (CR) commuters — the first of the next generation trains has arrived. While Western Railway commuters have been using a few new services on the new rakes for a few weeks now, CR finally got its first new Siemens-made rake, which will b ready for commuters by the month-end.
The local train commuters who travel to and from Virar will on the International Human Rights Day, December 10 boycott the trains to protest against the failure of the Western Railway authorities to make arrangements for more local trains to ply from Virar.

In addition to 57 close circuit camera's western railways will have 463 new camera's installed at entry and exit of stations from churchgate to virar. Though Central railway has also sent a proposal of 1500 camera's their approval is still awaiting for about a year now. Currently central railway has 70 camera's in 8 major stations.

On July 16, General Manager (GM) of the Western Railway (WR) AK Jhingron inaugurated Mumbai’s first railways-run cyber cafe, RailTel Cyber Express, at Mumbai Central station. Speaking at the occasion, Jhingron stated that 12 other cyber cafes are being built by the WR and that they would be ready by the next financial year.
