After Raj Thackeray’s campaign for Marathi as a compulsory language in CBSE and ICSE schools, even the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a writ that all teachers in its schools will have to clear a 100-marks test in Marathi, failing which their increments will be withheld.

A commuter who was fined by a ticket-checker of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking in March 2007, fought against the administration when he found out that he had been wrongly charged. We cannot expect the BMC to handle a population of 18 million. With a density of 23 people per sq ft there are bound to be hygiene and cleanliness issues. However, it is a pleasant surprise to see that the citizens of Mumbai are making an effort to keep the city clean. This can be seen on the city roads where people abstain from throwing things outside their car windows. read more »
